Ubizane Private Reserve Borders A Big 5 National Park In Zululand
Ubizane is a unique privately owned reserve which is closely situated to the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, the third largest game reserve in South Africa and home to the Big 5.
Accommodation at Ubizane consists of two very different lodges, Zululand Tree Lodge and Zululand Safari Lodge. The reserve is privately owned by Alan Burke who is passionate about Zululand and its wildlife.
Watch Wildlife while Relaxing on the Deck at Tree Lodge
At Tree Lodge, the thatched roofed rooms raised metres above ground level on stilts, are beautifully surrounded by a fever tree forest and guests can relax on the deck and observe the wildlife, be it the birds, monkeys, warthogs or nyalas. Each room has large glass sliding doors ensuring that the outside splendour is always on view.
Tree Lodge is very private and the ideal place to chill for a day or two. The setting is romantic and lends itself to couples looking for time alone and maybe some time at the bar.
Safari Lodge – Self -Catering Thatched Rondavels
The large thatched rondavel (rounded room) styled rooms are all self-catering and have fully equipped kitchens.
Spacious patios lead onto sprawling lawns scattered with aloes and trees. Safari Lodge is great for children as there is a play area and lots of space to run around. It is also great for adults as lounging by the pool is a pleasurable way to pass the day.
Safari Lodge is open and spacious and great for a family getaway.
We have visited both lodges on a number of occasions and every visit is different. The staff is a great bunch and adds that extra charm to the reserve. On arrival guests are greeted with a warm Zululand smile that personifies “gladness” that you have arrived.
Enjoy a buffet (breakfast and dinner) and indulge in high tea where great delights (savoury and sweet) are served. Take time to meet the chefs and savour the creative dishes they prepare. Beetroot soup, one of the dishes that qualifies as creative or perhaps different. Something out of the ordinary. Have a good helping of pudding and know that their pride is in the pudding.
High tea is great fun as the monkeys arrive at exactly the appointed tea-time. Staff is on high alert as a vervet monkey is smart and fancies sugary goodies. Chloe Goatashion, the resident goat, is quite a feature and often sits very comfortably on the leather chair in the bar. It is something to behold. A goat in a bar!
There has not been a time that Ubizane that has not been enjoyable and relaxing. Maybe chill by the pool, lounge in the main lodge, walk in the fever forest or just sleep – do whatever you want to do.
Spending time with my know-it-all grandson at Safari Lodge was extra special and it is a great place to introduce a child to the bush. It is never too early to teach them respect for the people, the animals and the land. For us that is important as Ubizane is about caring for creatures big and small. It is about caring for the environment and the wildlife. It is about people who care.
